First time for everything

In all my breaks from college, I’ve never been excited to come back home. I always wait impatiently for the day when I can return back to Syracuse and be away from this town that I hate so much. This break however, has been completely different. I came home with those same feelings of hating my town because it’s so boring, but I haven’t been counting down this time.

I’ve been home for four weeks and can honestly say that I enjoyed almost all of it. For the first two weeks of my break, my mom had taken off from work so we can hang out and get ready for Christmas because we always celebrate it up here. My dad doesn’t work as much in the winter so we were all home together a lot for those first two weeks. My town is one of those places where you need a car to get around, there’s no public transportation and absolutely nothing in walking distance. So we were stuck together in the house. My mother and I played scrabble, ‘cause that’s just what we do; and me and my dad cracked jokes like we always do.

For the second two weeks I was pretty much on my own; my mother went back to work and my dad had to do some work as well so I stayed in the house alone. This was probably the best part of my break. I love my parents, but I also love being alone and bumming around. This was much well deserved because I honestly haven’t had a real break since last year’s winter break; over the summer I took two sessions of classes up at school. I lied around and watched tv all day, and occasionally went out at night.

I honestly knew that this break was different because all I wanted to do for my last day was hang out with my parents. Now its not that I don’t get along with my parents, but usually I’ve had enough of them by now and spend the day talking with people online making plans for when I return. Instead, we went to the movies and made dinner together.

I’m leaving home tomorrow with good memories of my family and friends from just this one month off. No complaints or regrets. I guess this is a sign for the semester to come, I’m going in completely relaxed and ready for whatever comes my way.
